MADlifestyle Check In: Client Cory Chitwood
Posted in #MADlifestyle on April 29, 2015
We're pretty clear that our MAD programming is geared toward the everyday athlete, and anyone who is athletically minded with an appetite for intensity. And that's true, but there are some clients who take 'everyday athlete' to a new level through their own impressive athletic abilities -- and Cory is one of them. He's got his own impressive background as a collegiate swimmer, and a professional resume that includes his current role as a coach for the UVa Swimming and Diving team, but most apparent is his own extreme natural athleticism when he takes on any interval. We're so excited to have him (and his fiancé Ellyn) as a part of our MAD community, and absolutely love the energy and camaraderie that he brings to each and every class he attends -- Thanks Cory for sharing your 'awesome' with us. -Val & Dar

How did you discover MADabolic Inc.?
I discovered MADabolic through one of my swimmers, Hillary Peterson. She had recently finished up her college career and was telling me about this amazing gym that had opened up in Charlottesville. She knew I was a work out fanatic and thought the gym would be a perfect fit for me. I did the first workout and have been going ever since.
What drew you to MADabolic Inc. and how do the concepts fit into your lifestyle?
Since retiring from competitive swimming, MADabolic was the first workout I had done that felt like a main set in a swim practice. The workouts at MAD give me that same sense of daily accomplishment that I had in my swimming career. The coaches always explain everything thoroughly, and they are there to help with technique and to encourage you during the workout. I enjoy being pushed and they do a great job at it.
What is your fitness routine?
My fitness routine is very busy. I am currently preparing for a half ironman, so I try to get in 1 to 2 workouts a day while taking Sundays off. My workouts range from doing a MADabolic workout, biking 30-60 miles, running 5-14 miles, swimming 3,000-6,000 yards and doing core work.
What activities do you like to do outside of the gym?
I love to run on the Rivanna Trail with my two pups, Buffett & Zona. Anytime I can break away and spend some quality time with my fiancé is my favorite, whether that be exploring the different wineries in Cville or just hanging out on our back deck listening to country music while having dinner.
What keeps you motivated?
I have to workout. If I go a few days without working out or pushing my body, then my mind begins to wonder and I don’t feel like myself. Working out is very much like meditation to me. It is a time when I can shelf my stresses and be in my own world. I also enjoy being challenged, and if I’m not being challenged I begin to feel stale. I like to see what my body is capable of doing and feel that sense of accomplishment after a tough workout.
What are some of your favorite hangouts?
My favorite hangout is Fry’s Spring Station. I am a pizza lover, and it is within walking distance of my house. The service there is great, and I enjoy sitting outside feeling relaxed while hanging out with some great friends. There is also a great little spot behind my house where I like to take my two dogs to swim. They could play fetch and swim in the water all day. It’s a great time.
