Introducing Game Day 2.0: Team Format

Posted on March 11, 2024 in Program Design & Theory

We hold our annual Game Day two times per year on the Saturday of Q1 and Q3’s Deload Week, to help safely track your progress over your time training with us. Through a series of events that measure strength, power, athleticism, and endurance, prepare to put your performance to the ultimate test.

If it’s your first MADabolic Game Day, consider your first set of results as your baseline against which to benchmark your progress over time. If you’ve participated in the past, this is an opportunity for you to compare your metrics over time — think progress validation.

In 2024 we’re shaking things up. You can expect the same movements to be tested, but we are now introducing a TEAM FORMAT!

Why? Because Game Day, at its roots, originates from our combined athletic experiences training with a team…not only is this event more enjoyable when endured alongside your peers, it’s the perfect opportunity for us to resurrect our team-based nostalgia! We’re also inclined to call out the elephant in the room…the Concept2 triathlon. We are fully aware of the widespread panic that hits when it comes to this component of Game Day. While completing it individually can provide a tremendous sense of accomplishment, we get it…it’s hard. But rather than getting rid of this magnificent event altogether, our new Game Day team-format puts your triathlon fears to rest, as the event is compartmentalized and completed like a relay.

Here’s a simple breakdown of the new Game Day teams format:

  • You will sign up in teams of THREE (teams may consist of all males, all females or both male and female)
  • No more than 1 trainer can be a part of any team.
  • It will be points-based system – each team member will complete each movement individually (with the exception of the Concept2 Triathlon) and points will be aggregated for each event based on the provided scoring specifications).
  • To sign up, each individual will sign up for the same time slot.

Note that if you enjoyed the original individual Game Day format, you may still have that opportunity (location-dependent) – contact your local leader to inquire about individualized Game Day opportunities. That said, even when competing as a team, you will still easily be able to measure and track your individual progress by simply following the progression of YOUR personal scores over time.

Here’s what you can expect to see at Game Day (and what we’re measuring):

  1. LOWER BODY STRENGTH: SQUATS (DUMBBELL GOBLET OR KB TAILPIPE). This test measures pure strength through the lower body.
  2. UPPER BODY STRENGTH: PUSH-UPS (RING OR STRICT). This element of Game Day tests pure strength through the upper body through max number of ring or strict push ups. Your team must perform the same push up variation.
  3. POWER: BROAD JUMP. Come ready to load and explode. This test measures your horizontal prowess and explosiveness. You’ll get 3 opportunities to capture your max distance.
  4. ATHLETICISM: DOT DRILL SEQUENCE. This challenging sequence is our drill of choice to measure foot speed, agility, and overall athleticism. You’ll perform six different dot patterns during this timed test.
  5. ENDURANCE: MAD TRIATHALON. 500m SkiErg + 750m RowErg + 1000m BikeErg…back-to-back-to-back…for time (10:00 cap). With our new team format, each team member will take on one machine, and your combined time will contribute towards your score.

All movements must be performed with efficiency and in line with our standards for your reps to count toward your team’s score.

Game Day, like our overall programming approach, is purposefully timed within our training cycle. If you’ve been training with us consistently for (at least the bulk of) the last 12-week strength cycle, you’ve been preparing for this moment all along. And after deloading the week of Game Day, your body will be primed to perform when it comes to these tests.
